Types of Counseling

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they feel. It is used to help treat a wide range of issues in a person’s life, from sleeping difficulties or relationship problems, to drug and alcohol abuse or anxiety and depression. CBT works by changing people’s attitudes and their behavior by focusing on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes that are held (a person’s cognitive processes) and how these processes relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems.
An important advantage of cognitive behavioral therapy is that it tends to be short, taking five to ten months for most emotional problems. Clients attend one session per week, each session lasting approximately 50 minutes. During this time, the client and therapist are work together to understand what the problems are and develop new strategies for tackling them. CBT introduces patients to a set of principles that they can apply whenever they need to, and that’ll last them a lifetime.
Cognitive behavioral therapy can be thought of as a combination of psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. Psychotherapy emphasizes the importance of the personal meaning we place on things and how thinking patterns begin in childhood. Behavioral therapy pays close attention to the relationship between our problems, our behavior and our thoughts. Most psychotherapists who practice CBT personalize and customize the therapy to the specific needs and personality of each patient.

Person Centered Therapy
Client Centered Therapy or Person Centered Therapy was developed in the 1940s as a way to make counseling less clinical.  The client leads the conversation and the therapist is not seen as the expert on the client. This form of talk therapy is free from judgement and is non-directive.

The main points a counselor exhibits in person centered therapy are unconditional positive regard, genuineness, and empathetic understanding.  Unconditional positive regard is when the therapist accepts the client for who s/he is and provides support and care no matter what s/he is going through.  Genuineness is when the therapist is real, open, and honest with their client which models healthy communication and shows the client it is okay to be vulnerable. Empathetic understanding is when the counselor extends empathy to the client to both form a relationship and reflect the client's thoughts and feelings back to him or her; this will allow the client to better understand him- or herself.

Finally, in person or client centered therapy, we use the term client instead of patient and the therapist and client are seen as equal partners in meeting toward the client's needs.

Solution Focused Therapy
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), also called Solution-Focused Therapy  was developed in the late 1970’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As the name suggests, SFBT is future-focused, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought clients to seek therapy.  A hallmark of SFBT is its emphasis on clear, concise, and realistic goal negotiations. The SFBT approach assumes that all clients have some knowledge of what would make their life better, even though they may need some (at times, considerable) help describing the details of their better life and that everyone who seeks help already possesses at least the minimal skills necessary to create solutions.

Solution Focused Therapy session will include finding new solutions by learning from what worked in the past, looking at exceptions, focusing on the future, discussing the miracle question, using scaling questions, and talking about and learning coping skills.
