Oftentimes in therapy we talk about what your plans are for moving forward. I am a firm believer that one cannot successfully or efficiently progress without clear direction. One of the best ways I have found is to set goals. Anything less than a written goal, is a dream, and we are not in control of achieving our dreams, but we can absolutely achieve our goals. My favorite format to writing goals is to use a SMART goals format. This format allows one to really break down all the parts, obstacles, and desires of the goal. It is frequently said that the SMART goals worksheet is a living document; it should grow with you. SMART is an mnemonic acronym (just like the alphabet song or HOMES for remember the Great Lakes) for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Each letter allows you to think about your goal in a targeted way. The more detail we see in our goal, the more likely we are to achieve it! Down below, you will find the the worksheet I provide clients. Yes, you are getting it for free right here, but it will also be included in the journal I plan to publish later this year. (Yes that goal of mine is written down!). I encourage you to print out a few copies and take your time writing your goals down. Only one goal per page and plan to attach other notes, pictures, and whatever else you might like to your goals worksheet over time. If you would like to come by to talk about goal setting and accomplishing your goals, and you are not necessarily interested in counseling, please inquire about a wellness coaching package. A goal is a dream with a plan!
